Netflix is set to film its musical drama Mixtape at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios.
The series will follow the love lives of a group of eclectic individuals living in modern Los Angeles.
“Adding Netflix to our roster of production companies and networks at Cinespace is exciting,” said Alex Pissios, president of Cinespace Chicago Film Studios, in comments to Reel Chicago.
“More shows choosing to film in Chicago means more opportunities for people to stay in Chicago and make a living in the film industry.”
In recent years, Chicago has become best known as a TV filming location and hosts an entire franchise of Chicago-set shows from legendary producer Dick Wolf, three of which used Cinespace as a base in 2018.
High-profile features are less common.
Recent films shot in Chicago have included a remake of vigilante thriller Death Wish, which saw Eli Roth directing Bruce Willis.
Filmmaker Steve McQueen shot the acclaimed heist movie Widows on location in the city. As with Death Wish, his screen story is set in Chicago.
Dwayne Johnson’s monster movie Rampage shot scenes in the city, but mainly recreated it as specially-built sets in Atlanta.
