Alberta wilderness locations stood in for rural Colorado in Cold Pursuit, which stars Liam Neeson as a vengeful father.

Neeson stars as snow plough driver Nels as he hunts the drug dealers who murdered his son, in a small Rocky Mountains town. The film is a remake of Norwegian thriller In Order Of Disappearance and is helmed by the same director, Hans Petter Moland.

Production focused on The Fortress mountain range of Alberta, not far from Calgary.

“The remoteness is really important to this story, both in the feel it gives you and in the sense of, ‘You've got to make your own rules out here’,” says Frank Baldwin, the film’s screenwriter. “That’s kind of a classic American theme of the West.”

Location filming also took place in western Norway and in the Vancouver area of British Columbia when plans to shoot additional locations in Alberta had to be changed.

Alberta is steadily building its reputation for accessible wilderness story settings. Alejandro G Iñárritu’s 2015 survival feature The Revenant used Alberta locations as stand-ins for mid-West settings and gave the region a big profile boost, with Oscar wins for star Leonardo DiCaprio, director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki and Iñárritu himself.

More recently, the province doubled for prehistoric Europe in the movie Alpha, also a survival story.

Alberta is also well known for hosting three seasons of the acclaimed TV adaptation of Fargo, and recently hosted a week or so of filming for Netflix drama Lost in Space.
