Hobbs and Shaw helps boost Glasgow filming

The Hobbs and Shaw shoot was the city’s highest-profile production of the year and featured a large crew filming in the centre of the city over a week in October. Producers worked with city authorities to co-ordinate extensive road closures.

Glasgow was already known to the producers of the Fast and the Furious, having previously stood in for London in the franchise’s sixth movie in 2012. The city will reportedly stand in for London again in Hobbs and Shaw.

The movie itself features Johnson and co-star Jason Statham reprising their roles from the main Fast and Furious franchise as their characters team up to take on Idris Elba’s villain.

Glasgow also hosted filming for BBC drama The Cry, the four-part story of a married couple struggling to cope with the abduction of their baby from a coastal resort town in Australia.

“The support we received from Glasgow Film Office – in return for a commitment to use Glasgow-based facilities companies – was extremely important to the production of our BBC One show The Cry,” said Claire Mundell, producer at Glasgow-based Synchronicity Films that made the drama.

“The Glasgow Film Office fund is easy to access and encourages local spend, incentivising Glasgow-based production companies like us at Synchronicity to work with other local businesses, thereby growing the industry on the ground here together.”

Other high-profile productions to have shot in Glasgow in recent years have included Netflix movie Outlaw King, The Wife and Outlander.
