A prequel movie to HBO’s acclaimed organised crime drama The Sopranos is set to film in New Jersey and New York from next week.

The Many Saints Of Newark is set 30 years before the events of the TV series.

Co-written by Sopranos creator David Chase, the film takes place against the backdrop of the Newark riots of the 1960s when racial tensions were high between African Americans and Italian Americans in the New Jersey city that lies near the state border with New York.

Alan Taylor, a veteran of the TV series, is directing the new movie.

New York is an East Coast US production hub and New Jersey offers a base tax credit of up to 35% as a filming incentive. New Jersey is best known as a TV location for US-based shoots.

The Sopranos drama ran for six seasons between 1999 and 2007, and followed the life of New Jersey-based mob boss Tony Soprano, played by the late James Gandolfini.

While much of the show was shot on location in New Jersey, key interiors such as the lavish Soprano family home were built as sets at Silvercup Studios in New York.

Several key characters from the drama will appear as their younger selves in the film, including Tony, who will be played by James Gandolfini’s real-life son Michael Gandolfini.
