Artists Studio to film historical Ibis Trilogy
Artists Studio in London, part of the Endemol Shine Group, is to produce a drama adaptation of Amitav Ghosh’s Ibis Trilogy novels.

In the context of the narrative, the Ibis is the name of a ship where most of the key characters meet for the first time. Ghosh’s novels were published in 2008, 2011 and 2015.
Shekhar Kapur is set to direct the drama adaptation that will be made in partnership with Endemol Shine India and TV packaging company DoveTale Media.
“Our ambition is to create a major high-end franchise for the international market, matching the scale and epic sweep of the Ibis novels,” said Lars Blomgren, head of scripted for the EMEA region at Endemol Shine Group.
“This deal represents our group collaborating at its best, creating an exotic, never-before-seen tale with wide audience appeal. Shekhar Kapur completes the exclusive package and we’re expecting great interest in bringing this to the global audience.”
The involvement of Endemol Shine India suggests that filming could eventually include Indian locations when the project gets to the production stage.
More UK productions are filming in Far Eastern locations. Delhi-set period drama Beecham House recently shot scenes in India for ITV, but Malaysia is also proving popular among UK producers. Channel 4’s historical drama Indian Summers used Malaysia as a stand-in for northern India and more recently the action series Strike Back doubled Malaysia for countries around the world.
