Cycling movie The Racer is set to film in Ireland and Luxembourg with support from funding entities including Screen Ireland, Film Fund Luxembourg and Screen Flanders.

The movie follows an experienced Tour de France support rider who has to step up when a team member is forced to pull out after being falsely accused in a doping scandal.

Directed by Kieron J Walsh, the film is set during the 1998 Tour de France, which staged its early sections in Ireland before switching to France.

Blinder Films is producing with Calach Films and Caviar Films.

Louis Talpe, Tara Lee, Matteo Simoni, Iain Glen and Karel Roden are starring.

“I distinctly remember the Tour de France descending into Ireland in 1998 and the buzz that it brought with it,” said Walsh.

“That tour proved to be a challenging time for cycling, filled with scandal, emotion and turmoil, and I am confident that the film will be just as thrilling.”

Ireland’s international film and TV profile continues to grow and the country’s industry frequently collaborates with producers from around the world.

Currently in cinemas is Neil Jordan’s psychological thriller Greta, which is set in New York but filmed mainly at Ireland’s Ardmore Studios and on location around Dublin.
