Filmmaker Baz Luhrmann (pictured) is set to shoot in Queensland, Australia, for a movie about the life of Elvis Presley.

The untitled Warner Bros film will chart Presley’s life and music, and his relationship with his manager Colonel Tom Parker, who will be played by Tom Hanks.

Luhrmann’s team will use Village Roadshow Studios as a production base and will be spending around A$105m locally.

“Australia continues to be one of the great filmmaking locations in the world, where we’ve created everything from Paris cabarets to the Jazz Age in New York,” said Luhrmann.

“Since shooting significant portions of the film Australia in Queensland, I’ve been excited to get back to such a conducive creative environment to realise this film.”

The new movie is to be the first feature Luhrmann has directed since his lavish adaptation of The Great Gatsby in 2013, which doubled Sydney locations for 1920s New York.

Queensland is an international production hub in Australia and Village Roadshow Studios has recently hosted monster movie Godzilla vs Kong, as well as superhero films Aquaman and Thor: Ragnarok.

Sydney may soon catch up with Gold Coast, now that Disney has easier access to Fox Studios Australia through its merger with Fox. Indeed, an untitled big-budget Marvel movie is scheduled to shoot at the facility later this year.
