HBO's Game of Thrones prequel starts shooting in Italy

The hotly anticipated series is filming on the Italian coast at Gaeta’s Grotta del Turco.

Filming in Northern Ireland has been completed and now the production team, which includes production designer Luke Hull (Chernobyl) and supervising art director David Allday (Robin Hood), has moved to Italy for the coming weeks.

S.J Clarkson is directing a pilot of the series, which is set to explore the origins of the White Walkers and will take place thousands of years in the past. Jane Goldman is writing and showrunning it.

The show already boasts an impressive cast that includes Naomi Watts, Josh Whitehouse, Naomi Ackie, Jamie Campbell Bower and Toby Regbo.

HBO may give the pilot a series order and episodes are expected to be available in either 2020 or 2021.
