Meryl Streep project The Prom begins filming in LA

Ryan Murphy’s all-star musical film, The Prom, backed by Netflix, has started filming in downtown Los Angeles.

The film is an adaptation of the musical that premiered in Atlanta in 2016 and opened on Broadway in 2018, earning six Tony nominations.

Streep and Corden star as two washed-up Broadway actors who decide to go to Indiana to support teenager, Emma’s wish to take her girlfriend to the high school prom.

Other cast members include Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key, Kerry Washington, Ariana DeBose, Andrew Rannells, and newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman, who will play Emma.

Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin wrote the screenplay based on an original concept by Jack Viertel. Murphy, Alexis Woodall, Bill Damaschke, and Dori Berinstein are producing. Music and lyrics are by Beguelin and Matthew Sklar, with Adam Anders serving as executive music producer.

The Prom is part of Glee and AHS creator Murphy's five-year deal with Netflix reported to be worth between $250 million and $300 million.

The film is due for release in Autumn 2020.
