Del Toro's Nightmare Alley begins shooting in Toronto

The con men drama has an all-star cast, including Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett and Willem Dafoe

Oscar winning director Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Nightmare Alley, starring Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett, will shoot in Toronto, Canada from this week until the first week of May.

Del Toro serves as director and co-writer with Kim Morgan on the project, which is based on the 1946 book by William Lindsay Gresham about a world of carnival hustlers and con men, telling the story of a mentalist who teams with a psychologist in order to swindle the rich. At first, they enjoy success fleecing people with their mentalist act, but then she turns the tables on him, out-manipulating the manipulator.

The arrival of Nightmare Alley is a big coup for the Ontario region, which has also recently hosted Warner Bros.’ IT: Chapter Two (Port Hope, Oshawa, Toronto) and Titans (Greater Toronto Area and Kingston), Universal/Netflix’s Umbrella Academy (Hamilton, Toronto) and CBC/Netflix’s Schitt’s Creek in Goodwood and Mono.

Nightmare Alley is being produced and financed by del Toro and J. Miles Dale with TSG Entertainment. Fox Searchlight will distribute the film worldwide.

Del Toro’s previous movie behind the camera was The Shape of Water, which picked up four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
