War of the Worlds filmed in Bristol locations for FOX TV

Bristol was used to double for London with the series updated to the present day

A new iteration of sci-fi classic War of the Worlds filmed last year in Bristol, doubling the city for London.

Howard Overman is the writer/creator of the FOX TV series, which is set in present-day Europe and stars Gabriel Byrne, Elizabeth McGovern, Natasha Little, Daisy Edgar Jones, Stephane Caillard, Adel Bencherif and Guillaume Gouix.

The Bristol leg of filming lasted three weeks with the city doubling for London.

The College Street and St George’s Street area was used for large-scale stunt sequences featuring a number of bodies strewn across the streets.

A London Underground sign was placed on the exterior of City Hall. Filming also took place around Orchard Street, Queen’s Square, Armada House on Dove Street, the Create Centre on Spike Island and Stapleton Road in Easton.

Natalie Moore of Bristol Film Office said of the shoot: “It was a pleasure to support Urban Myth Films for the production of War of the Worlds in Bristol last year.

“The company had previously used Bristol locations in 2016 for the making of Crazyhead, so it was a fantastic endorsement to welcome them back for this major international co-production, which saw Bristol become the backdrop for drama featuring a world-class cast and some exciting large-scale stunt scenes.”

War of the Worlds is produced by Urban Myth Films and is a Création Originale for Canal+ and Fox Network Group.

Overman executive produced alongside Julian Murphy and Johnny Capps for Urban Myth Films. Gilles Coulier directed the first four episodes and Richard Clark helmed episodes five-eight.
