Disney's Peter Pan and Wendy to film in Canada

Disney’s newly titled Peter Pan and Wendy film is expected to shoot in Canada from 17 April to August.

David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon) is directing and co-screenwriting with Toby Halbrooks on the live-action remake, which is being produced by Jim Whitaker, who’s previously worked on Disney films such as A Wrinkle in Time and The Odd Life of Timothy Green.

Peter Pan and Wendy is based on J.M. Barrie’s classic tale of a boy who doesn’t grow up and recruits three siblings in London to join him on a magic adventure to the enchanted Neverland. One of the smaller characters, Tiger Lily, who helps protect Neverland and the children from the dastardly Captain Hook, is expected to be given a more prominent role in this film. Casting for a Native American or First Nations actress to play the part is underway.

Several remakes and spin-offs have happened over the years with mixed success. Warner Bros.’ $150m Peter Pan origins story titled Pan, starring Hugh Jackman, was considered a flop back in 2015, taking just $130m worldwide. But Disney will be hoping to have better luck, recapturing the spark and success of its 1953 animation version.

Peter Pan and Wendy is the latest in a long line of live-action remakes at Disney, including Beauty and the Beast, Jungle Book, Mary Poppins Returns, Dumbo, Lion King and Aladdin. With more in the pipeline, including The Little Mermaid, which is due to shoot at Pinewood Studios; Cruella, which has been filming at Shepperton Studios; Pinocchio; Snow White, and a sequel to The Jungle Book from director Jon Favreau.
