Season one of HBO TV series The Last of Us, starring Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal, has wrapped filming in Calgary, according to the director Neil Druckmann.
The TV adaptation of the critically acclaimed video game developed by Naughty Dog for PlayStation has been filming since July, including at a large set near Stampede Park.
The drama takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel ( Pascal) a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl (Ramsey), out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.
Druckmann and executive vice president, HBO programming Craig Mazin who both wrote the script are executive producers. They are joined by executive producers Carolyn Strauss (Chernoby, Game of Thrones) Naughty Dog’s Evan Wells and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.
PlayStation Productions, Word Games, and Naughty Dog are producing the series with Sony Pictures Television as co-producers.
Druckmann said: “My time in Canada has come to an end. To the best TV crew in the world, thank you for your incredible work, your passion, and for making me feel so welcome! I will miss you terribly.”
The Last of Us production is estimated to have brought in upwards of $200 million in revenue to Alberta and is being called the largest TV production in Canadian history.
Other productions to choose Alberta for a backdrop recently include Fraggle Rock, Under the Banner of Heaven and Wynnona Earp.
"What really brings Hollywood to us, beyond our crew base and quality of crew and talent, is the quality of our vistas and backdrops," said Luke Azevedo at the Calgary Economic Development. "So they're going to all these smaller regions - the prairies, the mountains, the badlands - and they're investing big dollars there," Azevedo said.
The Last of Us will be available on HBO and to stream on HBO Max.
