UK shoot begins on Margot Robbie's Barbie

The project is underway at Warner Bros. Leavesden, with Greta Gerwig set to direct.

Filming is underway at Warner Bros. Leavesden on Barbie, a live-action feature based on the iconic Mattel doll and her world. Margot Robbie plays the lead role.

Margot Robbie also produces under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner; the film is a co-production with Heyday Films, Warner Bros. and Mattel Films.

Greta Gerwig is in the director’s chair, calling the shots from a screenplay she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach.

Ryan Gosling plays Ken, leading a starry supporting cast including America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon and Simu Liu. Variety recently reported exclusively that Alexandra Shipp had also joined the cast.

In an interview with British Vogue last summer, Robbie said of the project: “… it comes with a lot of baggage … and a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it.

“People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”
