Johnny Depp's first film role since his defamation trial will be in the French feature La Favorite, set to shoot across France this summer.

The actor will portray King Louis XV in the period piece and star opposite Maïwenn Le Besco (Polisse, Mon Roi), who plays Jeanne du Barry - a countess who was Louis XV's last mistress. She also serves as the film's director.

The project is being produced by Pascal Caucheteux and Gregoire Sorlat’s Paris-based Why Not Productions (A Prophet). Despite earlier reports from Bloomberg, Netflix is not financing the production but has licensed the film to stream in France following the country’s 15-month theatrical run in 2023.

According to local French outlet, Le Figaro, the film will shoot for three months this summer across multiple French locations including the Versailles Palace.
