Production has started in New York City on The Walking Dead spin-off series, Isle of the Dead, for AMC

The show stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan Smith and Lauren Cohan as Maggie Rhee, who are reprising the roles from the flagship TWD series.

Principal photography will take place in Manhattan, New York, while studio filming will commence in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

AMC confirmed that the series will begin with a six-episode first season with the following plot description... Isle of the Dead envisions the popular Maggie and Negan characters traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.

Taking to Instagram to announce the first day of the shoot on Sunday (17 July), Morgan posted a picture of the pilot script cover page and captioned the post: “Here we go.”

Director-cinematographer Loren Yaconelli (World Beyond) is helming the project, while Eli Jorné will serve as showrunner and writer, having co-created the series alongside Scott Gimple.

During an interview on The Rick Eisen Show earlier this year in March, Morgan teased the post-apocalyptic NYC-set shoot: “I think seeing zombies in Manhattan is gonna be kinda super fantastic. I’m really excited about that. We’ve got a studio on the Jersey side, and then we’ll shoot in the city.”

Isle of the Dead is set to premiere on AMC in 2023.
