Spanish director Fernando Trueba’s English-language romantic thriller Haunted Heart is set to shoot on Mount Pelion in central Greece this autumn.

Spain’s Atlantika Films and Greek company Blonde are co-producing the project, which has been in the works for more than 15 years. Originally it was due to be produced by Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp and starring Penelope Cruz.

The latest cast includes Matt Dillon (Crash), Aida Folch (The Artist and the Model) and Juan Urrego (Memoria).

The Spanish film institute (ICAA), broadcaster RTVE and Comunidad Madrid are among those supporting the film.

Mount Pelion is considered one of the most beautiful mountains in Greece with thick forests, coves, numerous beaches and an abundance of springs, gorges and streams.

As a country, Greece is proving to be an extremely popular filming location, recently hosting major projects including Netflix’s follow-up to Knives Out, starring Daniel Craig, David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future, Brad Furman’s action film Tin Soldier, starring Robert De Niro, Amazon/Paramount’s Jack Ryan series, Millennium Media’s gangster movie, The Enforcer, starring Antonio Banderas, and thriller The Bricklayer, starring Aaron Eckhart.

Nia Vardalos is also currently filming the third installation of My Big Fat Greek Wedding in Greece on the island of Corfu and in Attica.

Trueba won an Oscar in 1994 for his film Belle Epoque.
