A follow up to the 1996 action-drama, Twisters, is in the works from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment.

According to Deadline, Frank Marshall (Signs, Raiders of the Lost Ark) is producing the pic and is readying a spring 2023 start.

Steven Spielberg reportedly pitched The Revenant screenwriter, Mark L. Smith, to helm the script; a director is to be confirmed.

The original '90s film centred on Bill (Bill Paxton) and Jo Harding (Helen Hunt) who are advanced storm chasers on the brink of divorce and must join together to create an advanced weather-alert system by putting themselves in the cross-hairs of extremely violent tornadoes.

It was directed by Jan de Bont and written by Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin.

Filming took place across multiple states in the USA including Iowa, California and Oklahoma, as well as Ontario, Canada. It is unclear where the sequel will be filmed.
