Filming is underway on Frankie Muniz starrer Renner in Spring Hope, Nash County, North Carolina.
The thriller, co-starring The Flash's Violett Beane is the first film to be shot in the area with the newly formed Ascent Studios, which opened last month.
In a plot summary by Deadline, Renner follows a computer genius of the same name, played by Muniz, as he seeks to court his neighbour Jamie (Beane) with the help of an AI he develops named Salenus — only to discover that he accidentally programmed his manipulative mother into it.
Renner is directed by Robert Rippberger (Those Who Walk Away) and written by Martin Medina and David Largman Murray, from a story by Luke Medina.
Rippberger will produce the pic alongside Martin Medina, KT Kent, Devin Keaton, and Jay Burnley of Slated. Executive producers include: Greg Gertmenian, Ali Baghdadi, Kyle Pritchard, Stan Hahnel, LeaAnne Hahnel, Anita Konka, Laura Winstead, Nathan Edwards, and Neuman Vong.
In a statement to Deadline, Ripperberger said: “I was immediately attracted to the powerful, unnerving, and darkly freudian script from Martin Medina and Luke Medina. I am thrilled to be working with Frankie and Violett to bring Renner to the big screen for what will be a fresh A.I. thriller.”
Renner will film in Spring Hope for another week.
