Ohio film tax credit increases to $50 million

Ohio legislators recently green-lit a change to the state's motion picture tax relief incentives that have now come into effect, and will expand to a total of $75m in the 2024 fiscal year. 

The tax relief increase is set for two waves. The first rise began this July, from $40m (£31m) to $50m (£38.8m) for the current fiscal year, with an added $25m (£25m) in infrastructure and production tax incentives set for the 2024 fiscal year. 

Greater Cleveland Film Commission President Bill Garvey expects the increase will bolster production and relevant jobs within the state.

Major movies filmed in Ohio include the recent LeBron James biopic Shooting Stars, last year’s White Noise starring Adam Driver, and Judas and the Black Messiah.

While major studio productions have halted due to the SAG-AFTRA and WAG strikes, Garvey says Ohio is ready to hit the ground running when the strikes end, citing a high demand for "content".

"We want to make sure that there are jobs when things are resolved in the strike for our local crew," he told Cleveland Magazine.
