César Díaz is shooting his second feature, Mexico 86 starring Bérénice Bejo

Belgium-based Guatemalan filmmaker César Díaz began filming his second feature film Mexico 86 on September 1 in Mexico.
Díaz came to attention in 2019 for his debut film Our Mothers which won Cannes' Caméra d’or award. His latest film stars Bérénice Bejo as Maria. The synopsis reads: "Maria is a Guatemalan revolutionary activist exiled for many years in Mexico where she continues her political work.
"When her 10-year-old son comes to live with her, she will have to make a difficult choice between her role as a mother and that of activist."
Bejo stars alongside newcomer Matheo Labbe, Leonardo Ortizgris, and Julieta Egurrola.
Per Cineuropa, Mexico 86 is shooting in Guatemala and Mexico from August 28 until October 20. Virginie Surdej will serve as director or photography.
Díaz reunites with Our Mothers producers Anne-Laure Guegan and Géraldine Sprimont, who are partners in Need Productions with Díaz. Co-producers are Delphine Schmit for Tripode Productions (France) and Hans Everaert for Menuetto Film (Belgium). It has also received funding from the Centre du Cinéma et de l’Audiovisuel de la Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, the Vlaams Audiovisuel Fonds, screen.brussels, the RTBF, Proximus, Be TV, Shelter Prod, the National Lottery, the New Dawn funds, Canal+, France TV and Creative Media.
