Heartstopper indie See-Saw Films has bagged another Netflix order with Australian wellness scam drama Apple Cider Vinegar

The series has been created by Nine Perfect Strangers writer Samantha Strauss and will be co-produced through her See-Saw joint venture label Picking Scabs.

It is set at the birth of social media and follows two young women – Belle and Milla – who set out to cure their life-threatening illnesses through health and wellness, garnering a faithful online following along the way. However, the whole enterprise is based on a lie.

Unbelievable star Kaitlyn Dever and The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart's Alycia Denam-Carey co-star alongside The Bold Type's Aisha Dee, Tilda Cobham-Hervey who also featured in The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, Succession's Ashley Zukerman and Mark Coles Smith.

Strauss is writing with Anya Beyersdorf and Angela Betzien, with the series directed by Jeffrey Walker.

Yvonne Collins produces with See-Saw’s Libby Sharpe as co-producer. Exec producers are See-Saw’s Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Lizz Watts, with Strauss, Picking Scabs’ Louise Gough, and Dever. Jeffrey Walker and Simon Gillis co-exec produce.

Apple Cider Vinegar is shot in Melbourne and is supported by VicScreen through the Victorian Production Fund.

Netflix director of content for ANZ, Que Minh Luu said: “Our ambition for Australian stories continues to build with Apple Cider Vinegar. We’re luring our homegrown global success stories back here where they belong, to make Australian shows that deliver the unexpected thrills Australian audiences crave on Netflix.

“Between See-Saw Films/Picking Scabs, the extraordinary creator Sam Strauss, and our shockingly brilliant cast, we can’t wait for this incredible drama series to delight audiences wherever they are.”

Watts and Gough said: “Samantha Strauss has created a series that is searing in its comment but entertaining at its very core. It’s complex, it’s got bounce and it’s got bite, and we love it.

“We have a brilliant creative team under the fine leadership of director Jeffrey Walker and one of the best cast ensembles in an Australian production. This is a Melbourne story with a global reach.”

Canning and Sherman added: “We are delighted to announce Apple Cider Vinegar as the first production through Picking Scabs, See-Saw’s label with Samantha Strauss. Sam is an exceptional and rare talent, and we have an incredibly exciting upcoming slate.”
