The Darkness, the first TV series from Chocolat and The Cider House Rules director Lasse Hallstrom, has begun principal photography in Reykjavík.

CBS Studios, Iceland's Truenorth, and Stampede Ventures are co-producing the English language drama for Icelandic streaming company Síminn.

The series is the first to be borne from the international first-look deal between CBS Studios and Stampede Ventures, struck in 2020.

The Darkness is based on the thriller series by Ragnar Jónasson and follows Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir (Lena Olin) as she investigates a shocking murder case whilst coming to terms with her own personal traumas.

Facing early retirement and forced to take on a new partner, she is determined to find the killer, even if it means putting her own life in danger.

Also rounding out the cast are Pennyworth's Jack Bannon, Shetland's Douglas Henshall, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson of A Gentleman in Moscow, Thorsteinn Bachmann, Þorvaldur Davíð Kristjánsson, Tora Hallström, Ahd Tamimi and Árni Þór Lárusson.

Greg Silverman and John-Paul Sarni are executive producers for Stampede Ventures alongside novelist Jónasson. Amelia Mysko is co-producer. Kristinn Thordarson and Leifur B. Dagfinnsson serve as executive producers for Truenorth.
