Aisling Walsh’s biopic Ethel starring Unorthodox’s Shira Haas and Sarah Paulson is set to commence production in Montreal, Canada later this year.

Based on the true story of Ethel Stark who conducted the Montreal Women’s Symphony Orchestra during the 1940s, the film follows the trailblazer as she helps make music more accessible to all genders, classes and races. Celeste Parr pens the screenplay.

Ethel is currently in pre-production and is produced by Marie-Claude Poulin and Martina Niland for Ireland’s Port Pictures.

Bankside is introducing the film to buyers at Berlin’s European Film Market (EFM, February 15-21).

Walsh is a Bafta TV winner in best mini-series for Room At The Top (2013) while her previous film credits include 2016’s Maudie starring Sally Hawkins and 2003’s Song For A Raggy Boy.
