“The Czech Republic has world-class locations, great production facilities and international-calibre crew, as well as a straightforward, efficient production rebate,” said Richard Wright, of production company Lakeshore Entertainment, when the location was first announced for Prague in July.

The Underworld franchise started in 2003 with a Hungary shoot and the sequels have since followed filming incentive programmes to New Zealand and British Columbia in Canada.

Prague is a hugely popular European filming location with a 20% tax incentive for international shoots. High-profile feature productions in recent years have included Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and the Soviet-set drama Child 44. Underworld 5 is being serviced by Stillking Films.

The BBC has filmed two series of its adventure drama The Musketeers in and around Prague, and the show was in fact the biggest-spending international production in the Czech Republic in 2014.
