The first sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, written by Harry Potter author JK Rowling, has wrapped principal photography in the UK.

Entitled Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the story follows Jude Law's young Albus Dumbledore as he recruits Eddie Redmayne's Newt Scamander to help tackle Johnny Depp's villainous wizard Grindelwald.

As with all eight Harry Potter films, both Fantastic Beasts movies were based at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden, a studio facility near London that was bought by Warner Bros when the Potter franchise wrapped seven years ago.

The first Fantastic Beasts film was set in 1920s New York but the production team chose to recreate the setting on the back lot at Leavesden. The new film relocates the story to Paris.

Warner Bros Studios Leavesden offers a dozen separate sound stages and a water tank, which is the largest stage-based facility of its kind in Europe.

The studio has also been a production base for Tom Cruise’s action sequel Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and its as-yet-unnamed follow-up.

Fantastic Beasts is based on a fictional school textbook that originally appeared in the Harry Potter stories. Since the success of the first Fantastic Beasts film, JK Rowling has confirmed that the new franchise will comprise five movies.

International productions spent £1.6bn in the UK through the first nine months of this year, sustaining the UK’s position as one of the world’s top filming hubs. The next entries in the Fantastic Beasts franchise are likely to channel more production spending into the UK’s industry.
