Netflix is backing Italian drama series Luna Nera (Black Moon) that is scheduled to film at Cinecitta Studios outside Rome.

Produced by Rome-based company Fandango, Luna Nera is set in 17th century Italy and follows a teenage girl who flees her village when she is accused of witchcraft and takes refuge with a group of similarly-accused women.

Cinecitta has recently hosted filming for Michael Bay’s Netflix action movie 6 Underground and a TV drama adaptation of Second World War satire Catch-22.

At the start of last year, Cinecitta announced expansion plans backed by nearly €40m in government investment, and the studios have clarified at the Cannes Film Festival that the development of new facilities remain on schedule, according to a Variety report.

Government officials added that the country’s €20m film incentive support programme is mainly attracting Hollywood shoots.

Bond 25, the working title of the new James Bond film, is among the upcoming high-profile shoots scheduled for an Italian shoot, with scenes set to be filmed in the southern city of Matera.
