Oscar-nominated actor Mickey Rourke is the latest star name in Ohio as he films scenes in Cincinnati for boxing drama Tiger.

“This will be the sixth major motion picture in our area this year,” said Kristen Schlotman, executive director of the Greater Cincinnati Film Commission.

"This has been a thoughtful process of building infrastructure and creating the equivalent of full time jobs for industry freelancers. Our entire film ecosystem is expanding in Greater Cincinnati and the film commission is paving the way. This is only the beginning."

Ohio is a burgeoning US filming location, partly because of its 25% tax credit. The state has a per-production cap of $5m.

Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara doubled Cincinnati for 1950s New York in the acclaimed period romance Carol.

In the last few weeks Cincinnati also announced it will host scenes for the new Bruce Willis feature Marauders. Further north, the city of Columbus is scheduled to host Arnold Schwarzenegger’s upcoming drama 478 for a few weeks through December and January.

Boxing dramas are back in vogue at the moment, with Jake Gyllenhaal’s Southpaw released over the summer and Rocky spinoff Creed in cinemas in the coming weeks. Mickey Rourke in fact has boxing experience himself and was Oscar-nominated for his 2008 film The Wrestler (pictured).
