Television comedy series What We Do in the Shadows, based on the 2014 film co-directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, is prepping for a Toronto shoot.
The original mockumentary film, that Waititi (pictured) and Clement also wrote and starred in, followed a group of vampires living in a shared house in New Zealand capital Wellington.
Produced for around NZ$1.6m, the film made around four times its budget and has since become a cult favourite.
Waititi and Clement are also involved with the new TV version that will transplant the story to New York’s outer boroughs.
Production is scheduled to start in Toronto in the next few weeks and will run through to December. The show will launch on US cable channel FX next year.
Waititi is now best known internationally as the director of Marvel’s superhero movie Thor: Ragnarok. For the past few months he has been working on Second World War satire Jojo Rabbit on location in Czech capital Prague.
Clement initially rose to fame in New Zealand as part of comedy musical duo Flight of the Conchords with Bret McKenzie, and now regularly plays supporting characters in Hollywood movies and TV shows.
Toronto is one of North America’s biggest production hubs and frequently doubles for New York locations.
