A new Norwegian high-end TV drama, Atlantic Crossing, will begin filming in the Czech Republic in December before moving to Norway in February.

Swedish star of The Bridge Sofia Helin leads the cast alongside Kyle MacLachlan in the based-on-real-events story.

It centres on Norwegian Crown Princess Märtha, who escaped from the Nazis in 1940 and lived in the White House where she went on to become an influential figure in world politics.

MacLachlan plays US President Franklin D Roosevelt.

The 8 x 60 series is written by director Alexander Eik (he also created it) with Linda May Kallestein. It is produced by Cinenord for Norwegian broadcaster NRK. The story is set in the US, Britain and Norway.

MacLachlan said of his role: "To play one of the great American presidents – one of the great leaders of the 20th century - is a dream come true. He refused to be defined by his physical challenges and truly changed the way the American government reacts and responds to its people. He was extraordinary at a time when that's what was needed."

The Czech Republic is a popular production hub, often doubling for other countries. It offers a 20% cash rebate for producers and has a wide selection of world-class studios and experienced crew.

The Norwegian government offers a 25% filming rebate, with Tomas Alfredson’s adaptation of serial killer thriller The Snowman – starring Michael Fassbender – the first international production to take advantage of the incentive in early 2016.
