Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland is shooting new movie Charlatan in the Czech Republic.
The production is inspired by the life of early-20th century herbalist healer Jan Mikolášek and is being made as a co-production between the Czech Republic, Ireland, Poland and Slovakia. Barrandov Studio is one of the Czech entities involved as a co-producer.
Filming started at Mladá Boleslav prison, 40 miles from Czech capital Prague, and will continue in the Central Bohemia region of the country over the next few months.
Prague is a European production hub and regularly stands in for other parts of Europe. Taika Waititi recently doubled the city for period Berlin for his satirical feature Jojo Rabbit and post-war film The Aftermath used Prague as a stand-in for Hamburg.
Agnieszka Holland recently made period movie Mr Jones in Poland, focussing on the 1930s-set true story of a Welsh journalist who exposed Ukraine’s Great Famine in western media, a mass starvation caused by the policies of Joseph Stalin.
The filmmaker also directed two episodes of Netflix’s Polish alternate-history drama 1983.
