Prime Video's Indian Original series Citadel readying January production

Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan, whose credits include Badrinath Ki Dulhania and recent release Bhediya, will make his streaming debut as the lead in the Indian instalment in the spy series Citadel from Prime Video and the Russo brothers’ AGBO.

Filming is scheduled to begin in January. Raj & DK (AKA Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK) created the Indian Original show and serve as showrunners and will direct from a screenplay they co-wrote with Sita R. Menon.

Prime Video and the Russos conceived the Citadel universe, which will comprise various local-language productions that feed into one over-arching storyline. It is a natural fit for the Russos, who co-directed the last two Avengers and the last two Captain America films which tied together multiple Marvel Studios narratives.

As previously announced, Richard Madden (Bodyguard) and Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico) star alongside Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games franchise) in the first series, which hails from AGBO and David Well and premieres in January.

Additional local-language Citadel productions are in the works including an Italian Original series starring Matilda De Angelis (The Undoing).

Dhawan said Citadel was “a landmark moment in my career” and looked forward to “a spectacle is in the making”.

Raj & DK will serve as executive producers through their D2R Films. The Indian Original series is produced by D2R Films and Amazon Studios, with AGBO’s Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Mike Larocca, Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes and Weil overseeing production on all the instalments. Josh Applebaum, André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Scott Rosenberg serve as executive producers for Midnight Radio.
