HBO Max's IT prequel series, Welcome to Derry, has entered production in Toronto, Canada.

The ten-episode series directed by Andy Muschietti (IT and IT: Chapter Two), is a prequel to the two films — which are based on Stephen King’s novel — and “expands the vision” of the two film.

It reportedly unfolds in the eponymous Maine town, where four friends set out in search of a friend of theirs who disappeared mysteriously. It will also explore in depth the origins of Pennywise the Clown.

Muschietti posted an update on the filming status to his Instagram feed yesterday (April 8) with an on-set image of a personalised office door that reads "CLINT BOWERS Chief of Police", foregrounding a distorted preview of officers behind closed doors. The director captioned the post "Welcome to Derry".

Taylour Paige (Zola), Jovan Adepo (Watchmen), Chris Chalk (Perry Mason) and James Remar (Dexter) will all star in the show.

Muschietti, who directed both films, will serve as executive producer for the series alongside Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. All three developed the story for the show, with Fuchs writing the script and Muschietti will direct multiple episodes of the series, including the pilot.

Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane will serve as co-showrunners on the project which is being produced for HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television. Filming is expected to continue through to December.
