Michael Bay is filming scenes for Netflix action thriller 6 Underground in Abu Dhabi and other parts of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Scenes will also be shot in the city of Sharjah next to Dubai, and in Liwa, 150 miles south of Abu Dhabi, Al Hamra further west along the Arabian Gulf Coast and at Al Ain near the country’s eastern border with Oman.

The location list suggests the film is possibly the largest-scale international production to shoot in the UAE for some years.

Few plot details have been released about the film, but industry reports suggest a story in the style of the Mission: Impossible franchise married with the wry humour of the Deadpool films.

Indeed, the movie features many of the key creatives from the Deadpool franchise, including star and producer Ryan Reynolds, and writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Reynolds’ co-stars on 6 Underground include Melanie Laurent, Corey Hawkins and Adria Arjona.

Netflix’s production budget for the movie is reportedly around $150m – a record for a Netflix shoot – and action-heavy location filming has already taken place in Florence and Rome.

Abu Dhabi is the only city in the UAE to have formal filming incentive support in place, but Dubai and other parts of the country offer bespoke deals for local servicing, accommodation and travel.

Tom Cruise’s action sequel Mission: Impossible – Fallout was one of the most recent Hollywood films to shoot in UAE, with Cruise performing Halo parachute jumps over the desert as one of the movie’s centrepiece stunts.
